The Great Dain

In 1976, a small group of interested citizens from the cities of Welland and Port Colborne, in the Region of Niagara, embarked on establishing the South Niagara Rowing Club. The South Niagara Rowing Club was established along the banks of the Old Welland Canal, which was no longer being used for shipping. The area had the potential of being a wonderful rowing facility and great race course due to the high banks, which shelter the waterway from wind. After much work and cooperation from all levels of government and the donations of many businesses, the dream became a reality.

The waterway is now known as the Welland Internataional Flatwater Centre and maintained by the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation.

Since its beginnings the "Great Dain" Rowing Course has been privileged to host many regattas, such as the Ontario Rowing Championships, the Canadian Masters Rowing Championships, as well as the inaugural Regatta of the Americas. The South Niagara Rowing Club has also been the site for many Canadian National Rowing Team Training Camps and Trials, as well as National Team Crews from Great Britain, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. The South Niagara Rowing Club is truly home to a world class rowing course.

Presently, the South Niagara Rowing Club is home to over 100 high school rowers, and home to over 250 youth athletes and an adult recreational league. We are now hosting one of the largest high school regattas in Canada, the South Niagara High School Invitational held in May. The Head of the Welland returned in the fall of 2005 and proved to be a very popular event. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, we can continue to host these regattas and offer many the opportunity to row both in the recreational and competitive streams.

The club continues to provide many great rowing programs to the community with help and financial support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation and the Welland International Flatwater Centre.
